Exigencies of the Time

The even toned, well-balanced, deliberate and coherent throne speech for this 39th Parliament gives me pause to reflect on the wisdom made manifest by our new Prime Minister. Amongst all the symbolic trappings of authority, within the august chamber of the Senate, it was all but surreal. Our calm and reflective Prime Minister, a man of steadfast resolve, listening to the words of our Queen's representative resonating serenely upon the limestone walls marking the moment and his place in Canadian history.

Each and every new instance affording him expression to lead the country he knows and loves so well will be recognized as a gift for all of us now and for generations to come. Finally, a man with vision for this once great country has taken hold of the government without loss of blood. His way, as has been acknowledged by us all, will be to rule with due regard to a studied and principled manner of getting down to business.

I don't know if any of you have ever sat through meetings, at work, in the community, a board room, or any level of government; but, if you have you will understand the rigours of civility and respect which must be afforded those whose opinions and philosophies are distinctly divergent from your own. It's called politics. Partisan politics leads to war. Embracing a diversity of perspective is called leadership.

Getting anything done, outside of the rancour of partisan positioning and the drama of egotistical rhetoric, is won with patience, wisdom, and decisiveness. So the new Parliament begins. And not a second too soon.

We all may or may not know how Parliament is supposed to work. Trust me, Stephen Harper, is at a level of comprehension far exceeding idle punditry or media exposition. His command of politics, bringing a rag tag bunch of yahoos from out west to the great Senate Hall, cannot be denied. The traditional despotic fear mongering exclusionary tactics of the old guard has fallen away to reason, respect, and candour.

Each representative chosen from across this wide expanse takes their seat in the great hall, the agenda is set and debate over the rules which govern us begins. Fortunately, the juvenile malaprops deigning to run our house into ruin, sit opposite our Conservative ministers. Their lessons, should they be up to the task, are about to begin. Bad government means a country without direction or goals. Regaining the comprehension of what matters to the people who put you there, will take all our representative's humility and reflection to come together to recapture the greatness of the Canadian people.

While it may seem like Parliament doesn't affect each and every one of us, just think about your taxes. That my friend, is the direct impact our country's government has on each of us. When came a time when the glutonous pigs gave anything back? Frittering it away on selfish aggrandizement and corrupt plunder is at an end. If the best of us can't get it together and begin to work cooperatively on legislation that guides and directs us we are no better than the last band of thieves. Pulling us all together or hanging us out to dry, is not a crap shoot. Harper's mandate, given to him by the people, is to bring us all together after the lengthy storm of corruption.

The complexity of what exists as the administration of government policies today is mind boggling. Our red tape is literally strangling us to death. Witness the plight of the farmers. Our most responsible member within our government, our Prime Minister, given his due respect without the sniping from the lowly sorts whose job it is to criticize and harp, will get the job done. It shows in everything he does. He's a strong and principled leader. The best our time has to offer. He's going to be the one to bring true democratic principles back to Parliament. Just watch, and be amazed. Trust his judgement. He's leading us with instinct and forethought far exceeding our minor mutterings.

Everyone, from everywhere across the country has met in Ottawa and is smoking the peace pipe. No more partisan rhetoric. Our great Chief can and will form a great impression in all of us. Speak your mind. Become a part of what our people deserve. We are a great people. This is a great land. Ditch the greed and selfish individualism. Listen. Ponder. Respond. Regale in the virtue of a new collective sanity. Time is right.
